Maximizing the Golden Hour in Pediatric Severe Malaria Management: The Race Against the Clock
Severe malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children in many malaria-endemic countries. Despite advances in malaria prevention and treatment, delayed recognition of severe illness and late initiation of appropriate care continue to contribute to poor outcomes. The first hour following the identification of severe malaria often referred to as the “golden hour” is a critical window during which timely clinical interventions can significantly reduce the risk of complications and death.
Join us for another engaging session in the ALAMIME Alumni Webinar Series as we explore the importance of maximizing the golden hour in pediatric severe malaria management. This webinar will examine the urgent actions required to ensure rapid diagnosis, prompt treatment initiation, effective referral systems, and coordinated clinical care for children presenting with severe malaria.
Participants will gain valuable insights into best practices for the management of pediatric severe malaria, including early recognition of danger signs, emergency treatment protocols, administration of life-saving antimalarial medicines, stabilization and referral procedures, and strategies for improving health system responsiveness. The session will also highlight lessons learned from field implementation and discuss practical approaches for strengthening the continuum of care to improve survival and recovery among affected children.
This discussion will be particularly beneficial for clinicians, pediatricians, nurses, malaria program officers, surveillance and monitoring specialists, public health practitioners, researchers, policymakers, students, and development partners working to strengthen malaria case management and reduce malaria-related mortality among children.
