Dr Jimmy Opigo is the Program Manager of the Uganda National Malaria Control Program. He has 24 years of experience in public health work spanning from primary health care, health systems and national malaria program management and leadership. He holds a Master of Health Care Quality Improvement from University of Helsinki in Finland, a fellowship of health systems management from Makerere University and University of Antwerp and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.
As a malaria program manager he has collaborated, attracted, sourced funding and implemented programs with various donors including the Global Fund, the US President’s Malaria Initiative, UKAID, BMGF, WHO, UNICEF and Against Malaria Foundation amounting over a billion US dollars with efficiency and effectiveness. Among others he has led the implementation of three over 100 million dollars multiple product LLIN mass campaigns, initiated the Mass Action Against Malaria, MAAM, political and multisectoral engagement including at the level of the Presidency and Parliament.
He has led a program policy change introducing stratified programming, private sector engineering, decentralized programming and urban malaria. He has led the introduction of several innovative vector control case management tools and technologies, developed a strong and resilient program with over 50 staff and a strong collaborative partnership that implements for impact and his leadership has brought malaria prevalence in a highly endemic country to a single digit. He participates, speaks and contributes to several international foras and expert committees. He has implemented measures to mitigate the impact of COVID on malaria and collaborated with several research and academic institutions generating 50 articles published in peer reviewed journals.
