About The Program
The Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) in Uganda with funding from the Gates Foundation, in collaboration with ten schools of Public Health in eight other high burden Malaria countries (Tanzania, Nigeria, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Togo and Benin) is implementing the African Leadership and Management training for impact in Malaria Eradication (ALAMIME) programme. The programme is soliciting applications for the fifth cohort for the training.
The programme aims to train people working in malaria programmes in the respective countries at national and sub national levels to increase their analytical and problem-solving skills, leadership abilities, and implementation of evidence-based policies and approaches that adapt to the changing malaria landscape to support the transition from malaria control to elimination. Alongside individual capacity building, the programme aims to establish fora within the respective Ministries of Health that will bring together stakeholders supporting malaria eradication as well as alumni of the ALAMIME programme to drive Malaria eradication efforts in the country.
Programme Structure
The training will cover 180 hours, consisting of four online modules and a practicum:
- Module 1: Introduction to Leadership and Management and Data Use for Malaria Elimination
- Module 2: Leading and Managing Programmes
- Module 3: The Science and Art of Malaria Elimination
- Module 4: Data Use and Evidence for Decision-Making
- Practicum: Analysis of malaria programme data and generating countermeasures
- Alumni Activities: Monthly webinars and a community of practice
Each of Modules 1– 4 will be 40 hours long, undertaken in one week, and will include in-class assessments.
The Practicum (20 hours) requires participants to:
- Generate a case study based on a malaria control or elimination intervention.
- Conduct a training session on a malaria eradication topic at their workplace.
- Write a report analysing malaria data and proposing data-driven interventions.
Successful participants will be awarded a Certificate in Leadership, Management and Governance for Malaria Eradication by the ALAMIME Consortium.
After completing the training, alumni are expected to continue participating in webinars, community of practice discussions, and networking forums that advance malaria eradication across Africa.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should be officers working in malaria control or elimination programmes at national or sub-national (local government) levels in the following ALAMIME consortium countries: Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Benin.
Funding for the Training
Participants will not be required to pay any fees, as the training tuition is fully sponsored by the Gates Foundation.
